Our History
The Professional Nurses Association of Suffolk County, (PNASC) District 19 of the New York State Nurses Association was founded in 1987 by Margaret Hardie, Clare Hofmann and a group of Registered Professional Nurses who understood that Suffolk County Registered Nurses needed a local Association of their own in order to better serve Suffolk Nurses. PNASC was officailly approved by the NYSNA Board of Directors on January 21,1988. Margaret Hardie was elected the first President of the District. She believed that with a collective approach to professional issues, and with the community spirit that is inherent in the Nursing profession, Suffolk County would be able to address professional and community issues more effectively and compassionately. PNASC has awarded a yearly scholarship to both a Nursing student and a Registered Nurse prepared to advance in his/her career. The Margaret Hardie Award is given annually to a Registered Nurse who demonstrates leadership and dedication to Nursing.
In reaching out to the community, PNASC has offered the public CPR classes, participated in community events, and volunteered in times of need, such as the TWA Flight 800 disaster. Fundraising for community residents, advocating for quality health care and educating the public about Nursing are just some of the ongoing activities of PNASC.
PNASC celebrated its Twentieth Anniversary in May 2007. The Association now serves the more than 17,000 Suffolk County Registered Professional Nurses. Many of the goals involve participating in influencing how Suffolk County copes with the dramatic changes in health care. The Committees - Legislative, Education, Membership, and Communications - will continue to advocate for the Nursing Profession as well as the community they serve.
